Cost guide · Dallas–Fort Worth

What a pilot's license really costs in Texas.

A personal training budget depends on your progress and the flying you want to do. Here are our published rates, the fees that go to other people, and a calculator that builds your own total — with visible aircraft, dual, solo, ground and allowance assumptions.

Illustrative scenarios

Five budgets. Every assumption visible.

Reference illustrations at J170 $135 wet, SR20 $250 wet and CFI $75/hour. Not fixed packages, quotes, guarantees or A4 measured averages. Live fleet rates appear in the calculator below.

35 J170 hours ($4,725): 25 dual + 10 solo. 25 dual + 15 ground instruction hours ($3,000). Other allowance $1,500.

Separate 10–15% contingency: $923–$1,384

Private hybrid · 60 hours

$16,500

50 J170 ($6,750) + 10 SR20 ($2,500). 45 dual + 15 solo; 25 ground. Instruction $5,250; other allowance $2,000.

Separate 10–15% contingency: $1,650–$2,475

Private hybrid · 75 hours

$20,600

60 J170 ($8,100) + 15 SR20 ($3,750). 60 dual + 15 solo; 30 ground. Instruction $6,750; other allowance $2,000.

Separate 10–15% contingency: $2,060–$3,090

All Cirrus private · 60 hours

$22,250

60 SR20 hours ($15,000): 45 dual + 15 solo. 45 dual + 25 ground instruction hours ($5,250). Other allowance $2,000.

Separate 10–15% contingency: $2,225–$3,338

All Cirrus private · 75 hours

$27,500

75 SR20 hours ($18,750): 60 dual + 15 solo. 60 dual + 30 ground instruction hours ($6,750). Other allowance $2,000.

Separate 10–15% contingency: $2,750–$4,125

Other allowances are unquoted estimates for tests, examiner, relevant medical, basic materials and checkride aircraft; personal equipment can add cost. The $1,000 deposit is credited, not added again. No club dues. Hybrid aircraft allocation is an assumption: an instructor must review limitations, eligibility, night, instrument-reference and practical-test requirements and transition time.

Total aircraft hours60 hr

J170: 50 hr × $135 wet
$6,750
SR20: 10 hr × $250 wet
$2,500
Dual: 45 hr × 75 instruction estimate
$3,375
Solo: 15 hr (aircraft included above)

Ground: 25 hr × 75 instruction estimate
$1,875
Other allowance (unquoted estimate)
$2,000

Aircraft rates above come from live fleet records and include fuel. Instruction is a $75/hour planning assumption; confirm your training plan and current instruction rate with the team. No club dues in these training examples.

Illustrative budget before contingency

$16,500

The $1,000 training deposit is credited toward these costs, not added again. No club joining fee or monthly dues are required to train.

Separate planning contingency: 10–15%

What the allowance and aircraft mix mean

The allowance covers estimated tests, examiner fees, relevant medical costs, basic materials and checkride aircraft. It is not a quote; actual providers and personal equipment choices can add cost.

Hybrid examples assume 10 or 15 SR20 hours at the default totals, not a guaranteed allocation. An instructor must review the aircraft mix, limitations, transition and certificate requirements. These hour totals alone do not satisfy every requirement.

Progress, lesson frequency, required instruction, weather and examiner availability all affect a personal budget. Sport medical eligibility is conditional; discuss your history with an instructor and appropriate medical professional.

Where the money goes

Four line items, and only two of them are ours.

Aircraft time and instruction are billed by A4Flight. The written test, medical, checkride and your headset are paid to other people.

Paid to A4Flight

  • Aircraft time, wet. Fuel and oil are in the hourly rate. Current booking terms and billing minimums apply.
  • Instruction planning assumption: $75/hour. The examples use a $75/hour instruction planning assumption for flight and ground time. Confirm current rates with the team. A4 bills instruction and pays the CFI directly.

Paid to other people

  • FAA knowledge test at a PSI testing centre, once, before your checkride.
  • Medical exam with an aviation medical examiner where applicable. Sport driver’s-license eligibility and BasicMed are conditional; review your history and current rules with an appropriate medical professional.
  • Checkride fee to the designated pilot examiner who conducts your practical test.
  • Headset, charts and books. A used headset flies exactly as well as a new one.

What actually moves the number

Four things decide whether you spend the low estimate or the high one.

How often you fly

A sustainable lesson frequency can help retain skills. Budget depends on individual progress, required instruction, weather, aircraft and instructor availability and examiner scheduling.

Which airplane you train in

Aircraft rates include fuel. The J170 has the lower aircraft rate in the A4 fleet; the SR20 offers a glass cockpit and CAPS. An instructor reviews the aircraft mix against your goals and requirements.

Ground time and self-study

Ground instruction is part of the budget. Preparing before lessons can support progress, but self-study does not automatically replace required paid instruction.

Checkride readiness

Practical-test preparation and any additional training affect cost. Discuss readiness and examiner fees with your instructor; no outcome is guaranteed.

Straight answers

The parts most cost pages leave out.

Minimums are not a personal quote

The Part 61 private-pilot minimum is 40 flight hours. Your required hours depend on progress and requirements; the 60/75-hour examples are illustrations, not measured averages.

You pay as you fly, not up front

Start with a $1,000 training deposit credited toward your costs, then aircraft and instruction as used on one invoice. No club joining fee or monthly dues are required to train.

Training needs no membership

Flight training and club membership are separate products. You do not pay the $500 club buy-in or $100/month dues to earn a certificate with us — those only matter later, if you want to book the aircraft yourself as a certificated pilot.

Plan for extra costs

Include a separate 10–15% planning contingency. Additional training, personal equipment and external fees can change your actual budget.

Your first flight

J170 discovery — $165; SR20 — $200.

Before you budget for a certificate, fly one lesson. A discovery flight is a real lesson, logged as dual instruction — $165 in the Jabiru J170 or $200 in the Cirrus SR20. J170 is scheduled by phone; SR20 online. Both include 0.8 flight hour with instruction, briefing, preflight and debrief. Actual availability applies, with applicable training credit reviewed by your instructor.
